Historic USO Building
This month’s meeting of the Historical Society of the Upper Mojave Desert promises to be a very special event on Tuesday, June 18 at 7 p.m,. at the Historic USO Building, 230 W. Ridgecrest Blvd. Featured speaker will be Kay Blachly of the Ridgecrest Puppy Raising Club of Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Guide Dogs for the Blind (GDB) is a nonprofit, charitable organization. Established in 1942, it provide a safe means of mobility for people who are blind and visually impaired. GDB is the largest Guide Dog school in the country, and continues its dedication to quality student training services and extensive follow-up support for graduates. Their programs are made possible through the teamwork of staff, volunteers and generous donors. GDB receives no government funds, and its services are provided to students from the United States and Canada at no cost to them. GDB operates two training facilities (one in San Rafael, California and another in Boring, Oregon) and have more than 2,000 volunteer puppy raising families throughout the Western states. More than 15,000 teams have graduated since its founding, and there are approximately 2,200 active guide dog teams currently in the field.

Puppy raisers are responsible for teaching future guide dog puppies good manners and providing socialization experiences during the first year of the pups’ lives. Puppy raisers typically join local puppy raising clubs, wherein they share ideas and information, work on training techniques, and participate in socialization outings. Ridgecrest has one such Puppy Raising Club, and at this June meeting, Kay Blachly will give a presentation on the local club. After a short animated film showing the training of one puppy, Blachly will speak about the work and history of the local group and the national Guide Dogs for the Blind. She will then introduce a few of the members of the local club and, of course, their charming puppies!

The Society meets on the third Tuesday of most months. Meetings are free and all are welcome to attend. For more information on this or future meetings, call the HSUMD at 760-375-8456
