Kerncrest Audubon Society-March Program
7:00 PM
Maturango Museum
The Kerncrest Audubon Society’s program for March will include a presentation by Marty Dickes. Marty has been a Wilderness Specialist and Wilderness Lead for the BLM-Ridgecrest Office for over twenty years. From the beginning of her service, she has been passionate about monitoring wilderness areas and engaging volunteers to assist her and BLM staff to protect and conserve these special areas designated by Congress. She has worked with a variety of volunteer groups, including the Sierra Club, Desert Survivors, California Wilderness Coalition, Student Conservation Association, and the communities of Ridgecrest, Darwin, and Trona.

Marty’s presentation will review the BLM’s efforts to maintain the pristine and untrammeled characteristics of various Wilderness Areas that surround Ridgecrest area. Marty and the volunteer and BLM work crews have been busy restoring incursions and OHV trespasses into several areas such as the Golden Valley and Grass Valley Wilderness Areas. They have been working hard delineating and signing wilderness boundaries; installing and maintaining information kiosks at trail heads; constructing and maintaining barricades, fences, and equestrian-pedestrian gates in the El Paso Mountains, Bright Star, Kiavah, Owens Peak, and Sacatar Wilderness Areas. Using hand tools only, they have eradicated invasive tamarisk from miles of streams in the Surprise Canyon and Inyo Mountains Wilderness Areas. Marty’s latest effort is to monitor historic sites and to protect the historic Salt Tram in the Inyo Mountains Wilderness from potential wild fires. Protecting these Wilderness Areas helps to maintain important wildlife habitat and these Wilderness offer outstanding recreational opportunities.
