Classic Movie Night at the Historic USO Building
7:00 PM
Historic USO Building
We conclude our Poitier tribute on Wednesday, February 28 at 7 pm, with one of the actor’s most iconic roles. The 1967 American neo-noir mystery drama film directed by Norman Jewison, tells the story of Virgil Tibbs, a black police detective from Philadelphia, who becomes involved in a murder investigation in a small town in Mississippi. He is mistakenly suspected of the local murder while passing through the racially hostile town. After being cleared, Tibbs is reluctantly asked by the police chief, Bill Gillespi, to investigate the case. It co-stars Rod Steiger, whose famous performance as the red-necked sheriff nabbed the actor a Best Actor Academy Award®, along with four other honors, including Best Picture. The stellar cast includes Lee Grant, Warren Oates, Larry Gates and Beah Richerds. The film depicted a tough, edgy vision of a Southern town that seemed to hate outsiders more than itself, a theme reflecting the uncertain mood of the time, just as the civil rights movement attempted to take hold. Director Jewison tells a story of a white man and a black man working together in spite of their vast and often edgy differences.
