HSUMD General Meeting
6:00 PM
Historic USO Building
Tonight’s meeting will feature local resident John Anderson presenting a new book about local veterans, Scenes From Lives of Service: High Desert Veterans of WWI through Desert Storm.

A few years ago, Ridgecrest Mayor Peggy Breeden suggested that Ridge Writers, the East Sierra branch of the 110-year old California Writers Club, collect the stories of local people who had served in the military. As a veteran and a new member of Ridge Writers, John volunteered to help organize the effort. Scenes From Lives of Service is the result of that effort: 120 veterans’ stories that are set in the time period from World War I through Desert Storm, ranging in tone from terrifying to uplifting — and some very funny.

At the meeting, John will present a few of the stories and pictures from the book. Local residents will recognize many of the veterans whose stories are told, and perhaps learn something they didn’t know about the past life of their friends and acquaintances. The stories were written by the veterans themselves in some instances, or by family members, or members of Ridge Writers. Longtime HSUMD members won’t be surprised to learn that Liz Babcock was heavily involved in the project, writing many of the stories and editing most of the others, and designing the final product. The book will be available for sale at the meeting.

John, a Korean War veteran himself, is a member of the governing board of Ridge Writers. Besides coordinating the veterans book, he has authored the history of the Over-the-Hill Track Club, contributed several pieces to the Ridgecrest Death Valley Magazine, and, along with his daughter, maintains the website father-daughter-poetry.com. Before joining Ridge Writers, John managed the rare, collectable, and vintage book sales for the Ridgecrest Branch of the Kern County Public Library.

Ridge Writers, the organization that undertook this project, has since 1996 been a resource and organization for writers and readers who love words and sharing them with others. Its monthly meetings, held on the first Thursday of the month, bring in authors to speak about the craft of writing and publishing, and it provides a local link to the California Writer Club.

The Society meets on the third Tuesday of most months. Meetings are free and all are welcome to attend. For more information on this or future meetings, call the HSUMD at 760-375-8456.
