Classic Night at the Historic USO Building
7:00 PM
Historic USO Building
To celebrate Valentine’s Day on Wednesday, February 14 at 7 pm at the Historic USO Building, we will present one of Poitier’s rare romantic outings, one that the iconic actor actually penned, himself. In this 1968 film, directed by Daniel Mann, Abby Lincoln is featured as a lovely, hard-working servant to a wealthy family. After many years of employment, starting from her youth, “Ivy” seeks to strike out on her own to move to New York, enroll in a secretarial school and seek a career in that field. A big problem for her with that goal: the household that has employed her for many years absolutely loves the young lady, and tries desperately to dissuade her from her goals. Abby is held in esteem as a beloved family member, and that family is determined to keep her in their lives. The Austin family members include Nan Martin and Carroll O’Connor (before television's “All in the Family“ Archie Bunker days) as socialite, Doris and Frank, the owner of a successful local department store. The family admits that their lives would be turned upside down if Ivy sets out on her own and thus, decides to hatch a plan to keep her where she is. It’s actually the kids (Beau Bridges and Laurie Peters) who devise a romantic matchmaking scheme (to snare successful Austin business associate, Poitier,) by arranging a fancy meal at their home, prepared by Ivy, herself, and served hilariously by the spunky kids. From there on, the film, musically scored by the famous Quincy Jones, takes on a light-hearted, intriguing turn sure to lift your spirits on Valentine’s Day! As an added treat on this day of romance, Kim Metcalf and Karen Saaty from "Romancing the West, " one of our loyal film sponsors, will be on-hand serving yummy Valentine's Day treats! These ladies always delight on these special film evenings! Don't miss out!
